Sediment - Municipal, Borehole & Dam Water
Sediment is a general term for all sand, organic material and other small, solid particles suspended in your water. This is caused when maintenance is done on water systems; old water systems erode; the presence of solidified particles of calcium and magnesium (when these minerals are in the water). Dam and bore-hole water can also have high levels of sediment.
Sediment never travels alone, but is accompanied by dissolved components. The visible particles are not always harmful to your health, but some of the dissolved components such as heavy metals can be harmful. Dissolved components cannot be removed by a sediment filter and therefore further filtration is needed. A sediment filter takes out solid matter down to a certain size, depending on the type of sediment filter. A sediment filter is always the first stage in a filtration system.
Sediment in your water is abrasive and can cause damage to your appliances that work with water such as: washing machines, dishwashers, taps, geysers etc. Sediment also damages and clogs up irrigation systems.
